I am running an after school Art Program at Oak View Middle School in Huntington Beach and Valadez Middle School in Placentia through the Goals program (www.goals.org) started by a grant from the Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation. Both these schools are underperforming and serve a very low income population.

A big part of the goals program is community service and as such we put together several community service programs aimed at establishing an intergenerational dialogue between our seniors and our young people through a shared fun creative art activity. A part of these is the Egg Painting event that involves the young people in our program and others coming to the senior centers and painting large foam “eggs” in teams with those seniors that would enjoy doing this. This event is more about the dialogue that comes from the shared creative endeavor than it is about the art pieces. The people involved will work together and share of themselves.

My role in this is coordinator, assistant, sometimes art instructor. I also have besides the goals coaches, some volunteers from Michaels (where I also teach painting) to help with the general running of such an event. In 2013 we had these “Egg Paints” at three different Senior Centers in Orange County, Tustin, Orange and Huntington Beach and I am looking forward to doing the Egg paints and other such events we will be having in the future.

I have done several of these sort of things for different causes and purposes and also because they are just plain fun.
